Thanks to our globally aware Level 8 students, our last Family Event of the  year served as a wonderful opportunity for Turning Point Core Values to shine. Level 8 students gave mini-presentations on Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Each Turning Point Family came to a consensus on which person/group would receive a loan.  During Community Leadership, Level 8 students will make loans on behalf of each of our 21 Turning Point Families.  Future Level 8 students will keep track of the loans and give updates at Family Meetings next year.  When the loan is fully repaid, the Family will re-loan the money to another person/group in need. Thank you, Level 8 and the Turning Point Family Program!

What is the writing process? What does it mean? Sure, many drafts are involved—as are edits. What else? How do words come to life? For this third installment of the Mockingbird Monologues, you will see how engaged Level 8 students are with both their own character’s point of view and those Maycomb residents portrayed by their classmates. Individual students read their drafts in the workshop format in order to get verbal feedback and peer edits thoughtfully scribbled on 3×5 inch index cards. Watch this video to see students actively responding with specific feedback that will, ultimately, help shape their final performances!

Turning Point in the NewsThank you to all of the Turning Point families, Faculty, Staff, and Administration who helped make our Community Service Day in partnership with Big Sunday a huge success!  A total of 280 volunteers came together for a day of fellowship, community service, and lots of fun at Culver City Middle School.  Children and adults worked hard gardening, paint sealing, cleaning classrooms, selling books and lemonade, making sno-cones, painting faces, creating tissue paper flower pots for an assisted living facility, writing letters to military personnel overseas, dancing, playing games in the schoolyard, and creating two beautiful works of art.  Our wonderful book sale raised $547.30 to be donated to the American Red Cross to benefit victims of the recent tragedy in West, Texas.  Our lemonade stand raised $143.50 to be donated to One Fund Boston to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy.  It was wonderful to see the Turning Point community working so hard and having fun together!

Olvera Street Study Tour

L3 Olvera Street Study Tour 2013 2On Friday, April 26, our Level 3 students journeyed to another place and time on our trip to Olvera Street, a charming Mexican style marketplace, located in El Pueblo Historic Monument in the heart of Los Angeles. Our adventure began with a scavenger hunt through what is considered the birthplace of Los Angeles, and led us to historic monuments including the oldest house in Los Angeles, as well as unique Olvera Street finds like a giant 80-year-old candle and authentic Mexican sweet treats. We also joined together for a delicious Mexican meal, which our students ordered in their very best español! We concluded our journey with a stroll through the marketplace for an afternoon of shopping and bargaining for souvenirs. Our students’ excitement, curiosity, and participation made this day a truly memorable experience for all, and many are eager to visit again soon!

Publishing Party

Our three Level 1 classes combined to form one large group of enthusiastic writers. Students met in the theatre, split into small groups, and read to each other from self-created books. Stories ranged from realistic summaries of family trips to creative mermaid adventures!  Sharing ice cream on a hot day added to a culminating experience sure to be remembered!

Festival of the Arts

May 8th, 2013 | Posted by Mr. Segar in Elementary - (0 Comments)

Hats off to our student artists! The school community continues to enjoy extraordinary visual arts displays as part of our Festival of the Arts week. Level K students emulated Piet Mondrian, known for his use of primary colors, bold black lines, and negative space. Level 2 viewed and discussed Magritte and modeled their own compositions on his ideas. Level 5 produced an exceptional series of work inspired by our fair city, titled “Quintessential L. A.” These examples just scratch the surface of impressive works enhancing our environment on so many levels!

Using digital math, imagine a futuristic “Building 3” at Turning Point School!  Level 3 did just that with Google Sketch-Up software and their geometry knowledge. Fresh off of their math unit, students designed buildings with such varied shapes as rectangular prisms, triangles and cylinders with oblong vertices, unique surface faces, and polygons.

After Level 3 Teachers completed the geometry unit with Level 3, it was time to utilize the students’ math skills as graphic designers and computer engineers. Working with our Academic Technology Coordinator, they built dynamic 3D and multi-tiered buildings with elevators, jet-propelled packs, swimming pools with solar tunnels, and football, tennis, and equestrian facilities.

Along the way, they were introduced to our amazing maker space at Turning Point: the SmartLab.  They were shown the many procedures and protocols to effectively utilize the SmartLab by following some key rules. The fascination with the software and the use of the SmartLab by Level 3 was a remarkable way to collaborate and merge technology in the math curriculum.  To stretch their math skills further, this series of four classes in the SmartLab helped Level 3 create their vision and make their ideas more concrete. The result was out of this world!

20130419-0015On April 29, Levels 5-8 participated in The 1,000,000 Bones Project. Through this project students gained awareness about the current humanitarian conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia. After learning about these issues students got to work making many “bones” out of recycled and biodegradable materials. These bones, along with thousands of others made by schools across the country, will be displayed in the Washington, DC mall in June in order to raise awareness about these issues.  Students put their 21st century skills into action while completing this project. It was wonderful to see the students using their creativity, collaboration, and leadership skills to design, create, and problem solve!

While creating the bones, students engaged in animated conversations about the science of bone construction and the purpose of the project. The value and lasting impact of this project was nicely summarized in the post project reflections. A Level 6 student shared that, “When such a heartbreaking topic is presented to a group of kids it is not easy to make it into something happy, but what we did today showed me something different. It showed me that I can make a difference.” A Level 8 student shared that,  “As a Level 8 leader of  this project, I think it helped me become more mature and confident.”  Many students echoed similar feelings of empowerment and growth, as well as appreciation for the opportunity to be involved with a “project that really brought together the Turning Point School community for an amazing cause.” (Level 8 student)

Discovery.  Inquiry.  Perseverance.  These words describe the qualities that Turning Point School students demonstrated with their outstanding Science Fair projects in April.  Students spoke confidently about their learning – whether it was a Level 5 student recreating his or her experiment, a Level 4 student justifying the importance of a popular invention, or a Level 3 student describing the unique adaptations of a wild animal.   This project not only builds academic skills, it also reinforces the fun and diversity of the world of science!
